Chad Well, Twyning, Gloucestershire

Chad Well (also St Chad’s Well),   Twyning, Gloucestershire.

OS Ref : SO904363 / Sheet: 150

This was the nearest holy well to where I grew up, no more than 5 miles away, yet I never heard of it until a few years after I’d moved away.  I first visited it in May 1986, and what I found was this –

The river in the background is the Warwickshire Avon, which will within  a few miles merge with the Severn at Tewkesbury. The small swamp by the fenceposts is the site of the well, which  in the 1920s was  said to have been  ”a circular structure about 2 foot in diameter and a foot deep”.

A year later the swamp had been drained and the original structure uncovered – full story and more photos here –
