1566 – Death of Nostradamus, French astrologer.

1778 –  Death of Jean Jacques Rosseau, Swiss philosopher.

1843 – Death of Samuel Hahnemann, German physician and founder of Homeopathy.

1900 – The Zeppelin airship departed on its maiden voyage.

1947 – Alledged Roswell UFO crash – actually took place some 80 miles from Roswell, at Corona, New Mexico. The rest is history. Or myth. Or both….

1961Ernest Hemingway shot himself. His wife issued a statement claiming accidental death, but it was generally assumed he’d committed suicide…as did his father, brother, sister and granddaughter.

1964Lyndon B. Johnson signed the US Civil Rights Act, meant to prohibit segregation in public places.
